Moving Terminal Server / RDS Users Folders

2022-01-25 · Posted in Active Directory, RDS

How can I move these folders to another drive and set things up so that when new users are created, their User folder defaults to the new location.

There are some really compelling reasons to use a GPO:

1)Folder permissions for roaming and redirected data are really sensitive. Using the GPO will set the permissions automatically, and you won’t end up with weird errors that are hard to debug.

2)There is a tick box in the GPO setting that will cause the GPO to move the data FOR YOU the next time a user logs in. You literally don’t have to do anything. It will also move the data to a new server should you ever chose to move the location you’ve redirected to.

3)If configured properly, the GPO will apply to existing users AND to new users. You really don’t want to have any settings configured locally on your TS/RDS machines. They should be pushed with GPO’s so that you can swap the backend machine without anyone knowing.

Also I should mention that mine is a Loopback policy linked just to my OU with my RDS farm in it.
